Pure tin melts at 231.93 degrees Celsius. However, this value only applies to the pure metal. As soon as a second element is added, the single point often becomes an entire temperature range—for Sn85Zn15, for example, a window of more than 60 Kelvin. The melting behavior therefore depends significantly on the composition, and it makes a big difference whether you use pure tin or a tin alloy.
Pure tin and its fixed melting point
For some metals such as tin, bismuth, indium, or lead, this value is remarkably low. Pure lead melts at 327 degrees Celsius, while copper and silver are many times higher. This is exactly what makes tin so accessible for casting in the workshop, as the temperature can be reached with a gas flame or a small melting furnace. The boiling point, at well over 2,500 degrees Celsius, is so far away that it plays no role during work.
Temperature alone does not make the metal liquid. At the melting point, additional energy must be added for the transition to take place at all; for tin, this is around 7 kilojoules per mole. This energy is called the enthalpy of fusion. It occurs with every substance and can be measured particularly well in pure substances. In practical terms, this means: if the temperature stops at about 232 degrees Celsius and does not rise further for a while, nothing is broken. The heat supplied is then being used for the transition from solid to liquid.
Melting Point and Melting Range in Tin Alloys
As soon as tin is alloyed, the rule of a single melting point no longer automatically applies. Between the temperature at which an alloy begins to solidify and the temperature at which it is completely solid, solid and liquid components exist side by side. The mass is pasty in between. This temperature range is called the melting range. Depending on the alloy, it is only a few Kelvin wide or significantly wider.
A very common error we encounter in consultations is calculating with the average. If you calculate the melting point of an alloy as a weighted average of its components, you will be completely wrong. SnPb37 does not melt somewhere between 232 and 327 degrees Celsius, but at 183 degrees Celsius. This calculation is roughly useful for density, but not for the melting point.
When a metal ends up in a foreign melt Copper dissolves in a zinc-aluminum melt even below its own melting point. When dealing with a foreign metal in a melt, its melting point alone is not sufficient information. It is better to clarify such cases with us beforehand.
Overview of solder melting points
The following values are taken from the product specifications of the alloys we carry. They show how far the temperatures vary and which alloys have a fixed point versus a range.
| Alloy | Melting point or melting range | Solidification |
|---|---|---|
| Sn99.9 (Pure tin) | 231.93 degrees Celsius | fixed point |
| SnCu0.7 | 229 degrees Celsius | fixed point |
| SnAg3 | 221 to 224 degrees Celsius | narrow range |
| SnAg4 | 220 degrees Celsius | fixed point |
| Sn91Zn9 | 199 degrees Celsius | fixed point |
| Sn85Zn15 | 199 to 260 degrees Celsius | wide range |
| SnPb40 | 183 to 190 degrees Celsius | narrow range |
| SnPb37 | 183 degrees Celsius | fixed point |
Body Solder and Its Wide Melting Range
For some body solders, the material is specifically intended not to solidify instantly, but to remain pasty over a wide temperature range so that it can be spread and modeled on the sheet metal. The wide range is therefore the desired property there and not an accepted side effect. How wide the window is differs significantly depending on the grade.
Tinning paste is also available for pre-tinning the surface. Working with it produces soldering fumes, so effective extraction or fresh air supply is necessary.
When soldering itself, more than just the temperature matters. Always use the appropriate flux and clean the surfaces until they are bright beforehand. Remove flux residues soon after soldering with water and a little dish soap, because hydrochloric acid often forms, which attacks the workpiece.
Why the Casting Temperature Is Above the Melting Point
If you want to fill a mold, you do not cast just above the melting point. Some melts become viscous as they cool, and viscous metal no longer reaches fine contours, which promotes defects. The temperature reserve keeps the melt fluid on its way into the mold.
Equipment for Melting Tin
Before equipment comes dryness. If a melt encounters moisture, the water expands instantly into steam, the pressure rises sharply, and the melt splashes. As long as the metal is liquid, neither the mold nor the metal should come into contact with water, and tools must be dried before immersion. Basic equipment also includes safety goggles and non-flammable, heat-insulating gloves. Occupational safety standards for steelworks and foundries provide for both, and this is a sensible guide for the home workshop.
Unsere Gießlöffel sind bis etwa 800 Grad Celsius einsetzbar, also weit jenseits dessen, was Zinn verlangt.
Frequently Asked Questions About the Melting Point of Tin
At what temperature does tin become liquid?
Pure tin does not go through a pasty state between solid and liquid; it becomes completely liquid at 231.93 degrees Celsius. Only alloys with a melting range become pasty. SnPb40 becomes pasty from 183 degrees Celsius, Sn85Zn15 from 199 degrees Celsius, and the body solder Sn92Zn5Cu3 from 210 degrees Celsius. They are only completely liquid at the upper end of their range.
Does lead-free solder melt at a higher temperature than lead-containing solder?
For common solders, yes, including all solders in the table, but the difference varies greatly. SnCu0.7 only becomes liquid at 229 degrees Celsius, while SnPb37 does so at 183 degrees Celsius, which is a 46-degree difference. Between lead-free Sn91Zn9 at 199 degrees Celsius and SnPb40 at up to 190 degrees Celsius, however, there are only a few degrees. An exception is lead-free bismuth-tin alloys such as BiSn42, which becomes liquid at just 138 degrees Celsius. The value of the specific alloy is decisive.
Does cold damage tin?
Below 13.2 degrees Celsius, silver-white tin can transform into gray alpha-tin, known as tin pest. Just below this limit, the tendency for this is still low; it grows as the temperature drops. In extreme cold, however, the reaction proceeds slower and slower. It is therefore fastest at around minus 48 degrees Celsius. In heated rooms, tin pest is not an issue.
