Technical data for our water-bentonite bonded sand:
Water-bentonite bonded molding sand is an oil-free and more environmentally friendly alternative to the standard oil sand in our range. It can be processed in the same way as oil-bonded molding sand. A major advantage is that you can simply add 0.1% water to restore the sand’s strength—no special oil or paste is required. A drawback, however, is the lower gas permeability compared to oil-bonded molding sand, and the fact that the water in the sand can evaporate over time, causing it to lose strength if it is not stored properly sealed.
For use:
When making molds, the sand should be well compacted.
To prevent the sand from sticking to the object being molded and between the mold parts, use talcum powder or mold release spray as a release agent.
To ensure that all details of the object to be molded are shown to their best advantage, we recommend finely sieving new sand over the object before filling the mold. This guarantees that the entire surface of the mold is pressed evenly into the sand during compaction.
If you pour metals and alloys with a casting temperature above 400 °C into the sand, it will burn where it comes into contact with the melt. The water-bentonite bonded sand will also turn dark to black because components burn off.
To reprocess the burnt sand, use approx. 0.1% of the sand mass of water and simply mix it in. The black sand created after mixing can be used as a filler. However, only new, orange sand should be on the object to be molded.
