All are available as ingots; CuSn8, CuSn12-C, and aluminum bronze are also available as round bars in lengths from 50 to 2,000 mm. Larger quantities are available upon request.

Which bronze alloy is right for your project?

Alloy

Delivery form

Special feature

CuSn12, lead-free

1 kg ingots

common cast bronze, corrosion-resistant and wear-resistant

CuSn12-C (CC483K), up to 3% lead

250 g ingots, round bar

like CuSn12, but easier to machine

CuSn8 (CW453K), lead-free

250 g ingots, round bar

good hot and cold formability

Rg7, CuSn7Zn4Pb7-C (CC493K), up to 7% lead

250 g ingots

bearing material with good emergency running properties

CuAl10Ni5Fe4 (CW307G)

250 g ingots, round bar

aluminum bronze, corrosion-resistant even in seawater

The lead in the two lead-containing alloys does not hinder casting, but significantly improves machinability.

Rg7 and the tin bronzes generally have good emergency running properties. Good emergency running properties mean that a plain bearing made of Rg7 will not seize immediately if lubrication is briefly interrupted.

CuSn8 is easily deformable, but only moderately castable.

The recommended casting temperature for aluminum bronze is 1,150 to 1,200 °C, about 100 Kelvin above that of CuSn12 (1,050 to 1,100 °C). Your melting furnace should therefore reliably reach this temperature.

Ingots for casting or round bars as semi-finished products

The 250 g ingots can be ordered as 250 g, 500 g, or 1 kg. The surface is not polished and therefore appears somewhat matte, but the material is clean.

Round bars are semi-finished products for turning, milling, and further processing. CuSn8 is available in diameters from 3 to 15 mm in millimeter increments, as well as 20, 25, and 30 mm; aluminum bronze is available in 8, 10, 12, and 15 mm. The CuSn12-C bars are listed in the shop as Bronze Round Bars CuSn12 and, like all CuSn12-C articles, can only be ordered with a verified customer account. Since they are produced by continuous casting, their diameter varies between 15 and 17 mm, so there is no selection. Other dimensions are available upon request.

All lengths are given in millimeters, so a 100 mm bar is 10 cm long. To ensure safe handling, we deburr all bars before delivery.

The price for each variant is listed on the product page and depends on the alloy and weight for ingots, and on the alloy, diameter, and length for round bars. For bars over 1,000 mm, i.e., 1,500 and 2,000 mm, the base price includes a surcharge for the significantly higher transport costs for oversized lengths.

Re-alloying and Casting Bronze Alloy

If you need less than one kilogram of lead-free cast bronze, use CuSn8 in 250 g ingots and add 4 to 7 percent pure tin. This creates a lead-free cast bronze with very good casting properties, similar to CuSn12. If you are preparing your alloy from scratch, you will find the base metal under pure copper.

Crucibles, coated tools, and molds must be completely dry before casting, as molten metal will splash if it comes into contact with moisture. In foundries, safety glasses, heat-insulating gloves, and flame-retardant protective clothing are part of the equipment. For casting in your own workshop, this equipment provides good guidance.

For melting, you need temperature-resistant crucibles; a graphite crucible is standard for bronze. Classic graphite crucibles can be used up to approximately 1,200 to 1,300 °C. Ceramic crucibles made of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) can withstand temperatures up to approximately 1,700 °C, but are very sensitive to thermal shock and generally have a significantly shorter lifespan than graphite crucibles. They are only worthwhile if the melt must not come into contact with carbon.

Molding sand or temperature-resistant plaster are suitable for molds. In addition to the gating system, plan for risers for venting and feeders. Feeders solidify after the casting, absorb shrinkage cavities, and are then separated.

Before pouring, add slag binder for copper alloys to the melt. For tin bronzes like CuSn12 or CuSn8, a small addition of phosphorus, for example via low-phosphorus brazing solder, can bind oxygen in the melt and improve castability; too much phosphorus, however, is detrimental. We recommend pouring calmly through a simple gating system rather than plunging into the mold. This improves the casting result.

Frequently Asked Questions about Bronze

How do I order larger quantities of bronze?

You can order directly in the shop for gross merchandise values up to 6,000 Euros. For larger quantities, special forms, or many bars of the same dimension, please provide us with the alloy, form, and quantity by email or phone, and we will make you a personalized offer.

Is there a material certificate for bronze?

A 3.1 mill certificate with analysis is available for most of our metals upon request. We will gladly clarify whether it is available for your bronze alloy before you order.

Order Bronze Directly in the Shop

Order your bronze alloy directly here in the shop, with free shipping within Germany and at least 5 percent cheaper than in our shops on eBay and Amazon. With increasing order value, there is an additional quantity discount via coupon code in the shopping cart.

["GET
